Using the Master Tracks Pro Demo

Microsoft Windows 3.0 or newer
A Microsoft Compatible Mouse
At least 1 meg RAM

The demo version will automatically quit after
1/2 hour or so and you will have to reopen the Demo.

WHAT IS MASTER TRACKS PRO?
Master Tracks Pro is a Recording Studio that lets you record,
edit, play back, and mix multi-track songs just as you would in
a real recording studio. Master Tracks Pro is a full-featured
professional recording environment ($395.00) for musicians and
MIDI users. When used in conjunction with a compatible sound
board or MIDI synthesizer, the Master Tracks program lets you
compose songs by recording one track at a time. Master Tracks Pro
contains graphic editing tools that let you completely adjust the
music, fix any mistakes and easily add variations.

HOW TO INSTALL MASTER TRACKS PRO
Insert the Master Tracks Demo Disk into your floppy drive (A: or B:).
If you are at the DOS prompt type...
    WIN A:SETUP ...or... WIN B:SETUP
If you are already in Windows choose RUN from the Program Manager's
File Menu then type...
	A:SETUP ...or... B:SETUP

If you chose to install the Passport MIDI Drivers then the MIDISET
program will run automatically. Choose the MIDI driver(s) that matches
the MIDI or sound hardware that you have installed in your system and
click the add button to install the driver(s).

If you are running Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions or Windows
3.1 then you should use the drivers applet in the control panel to
install the appropriate MIDI drivers. If you are using Media Vision's
Thunder Board then you can use the Adlib FM driver.

In both of these cases you must exit and re-run Windows before these
newly installed drivers will become active.

After installation, click on the program icon or any of the song
icons to run the program. A menu bar and several small windows will
appear on the screen. These windows are the Track Sheet, Transport
and Conductor.

HOW TO PLAY A SONG
From the File Menu select "IMPORT..." and choose one of the demo
songs. The Demo Songs were previously recorded live from a MIDI
keyboard. To play the song, you click on the Play button or just
press the space bar. The play button will highlight when you press
the space bar and the music will begin to play. The Transport
counters will advance. To stop playback you simply press the space
bar or click on the Stop icon.

THE MAIN WINDOWS
The Master Tracks Pro windows let you view and edit music in a
variety of ways. With the controls in Master Tracks Pro you can
easily change many aspects of the music - the key, the tempo, even
the sound of each track.

To see and change the instruments of any track, click on the
"program" column in the Track Sheet window. When the program window
opens, select "General MIDI" from the instrument list. This will
then show the sounds availible.

You can change the tempo by sliding the Tempo Bar right or left.

THE TRACK SHEET
The Track Sheet window can contain up to 64 tracks of data and has
controls for naming tracks, recording, soloing, assigning MIDI
channels and program numbers and looping tracks. The Track Sheet
window is where you organize and name the individual tracks, build
your song and determine what instruments will be played by each track.

THE SONG EDITOR
Master Tracks Pro has powerful graphic input and editing facilities
that let you look at different parts of the song and edit the
measures. The Song Editor is a bar chart of your song, showing you
each track as measures in time. Solid black measures contain data
and hollow measures contain only musical rests. Notice how the
display follows the music as it plays back.

The Song Editor can be used to build and edit songs. You can
perform editing operations like cut, copy and paste on measures
by first selecting an area to be edited, and then performing the
edit operation. You can also mix two tracks together. You can
select a section of the song, or an entire track using the mouse.
The Song Editor is a very powerful tool for building songs,
repeating sections and using the power of the computer to help
you compose.

THE TRANSPORT
The window at the bottom of the screen is called the Transport - it
controls playback of the song and tells you which song is in
memory. The Transport has controls for fast forward, rewind, pause
and record, just like a tape deck. You can even fast forward while
playing back to locate part of a song. On the left of the window
you see some counters that show us the location in the song in
measures, beats and clocks. Below it you can see the elapsed time
in hours, minutes, seconds and frames. These counters let you
locate different parts of the song.

THE STEP EDITOR
In the Step Editor the notes are displayed as lines that show the
pitch and length of the notes. You can use a mouse to enter notes by
clicking on the note icons and then clicking on the grid to place them.

EDITING THE MUSIC

Master Tracks lets you change many aspects of a track after you have
recorded it, like the key (or pitch) of the notes, the durations, the
velocity or dynamics of the notes and their rhythms, and the tempo
and meter.

HOW TO SELECT AN AREA
Using the mouse, select a rectangular region of measures in the
Song Editor by clicking and dragging down the rectangle of
measures you wish to select. You can select an entire track
by clicking on the track # on the left edge of the window.

For example, to change the key of any track : select the track by
clicking on the track number, then choose "Transpose" from he
Change menu. You will see the transpose dialog appear. Double
click on the first field in the dialog and change the "C3" to "C2".
Then click OK - the part will go down an octave in pitch. If you
do not like the change , simply choose "UNDO" from the Edit
Menu and the track will go back to the way it was.

This procedure is the same for all other Change items.

Feel free to explore the other menus and windows to see the power
of Master Tracks Pro.

Master Tracks Pro is the professional's choice in MIDI sequencing
and recording. Passport also has two programs that will show and
print standard sheet music - the entry level Music Time ($249.00)
and the professional version, ENCORE ($595.00).
